This Is What I’ve Learned While Fostering Pit Bulls

Written by Neely Conway and originally posted on BarkPost:
It’s no secret that I’m a fan of pit bulls. As a mother to two and foster mom to many, I have always had a soft spot for a dog with a blocky head.
And although I wish I could say I’ve taught these dogs a thing or two, it would be a disservice to the role they have played in my life. They have taught me way more than I could ever begin to teach them.
Lesson #1:  Freedom Rides Are the Best Rides
When I picked Elly up from the shelter, I wrapped my arms around her belly and awkwardly placed her in my backseat. She rested her head outside the window, just enough to feel the air. She was an older, overweight pit bull mix who needed a foster home to recover during her heartworm treatment. We had no idea she would end up staying with us for eight months as she endured and recovered from many illnesses, infections, and hardships.

During those months, Elly would ride everywhere with me, her face poking out the window. Those were some of my favorite moments with her, and I can’t help but think she would agree. Even now, three months after she’s been adopted, I still miss her in my backseat.
I could argue for hours about the benefits of adopting a shelter dog, as opposed to purchasing a dog from a reputable breeder. But at the end of the day, nothing can quite compare to their ride away from a life of confinement towards a life of freedom.
Nothing can compare to the loud snoring when their head hits their brand new bed. Or the excitement in their eyes when they begin to devour their first real meal. Or the first time they realize that you will always come back home.
Nothing can quite compare to their gradual realization that humans really can be good.
Lesson #2:  Smiling Is Contageous

Lesson #3:  No Matter What’s Happened in Your Past, You Can Always Get Better
I first met Mari at the Fulton County Animal Shelter. She was the only dog out of a local fighting ring bust that was dog-friendly, but she was having difficulty warming up to humans. I knew immediately she’d be a perfect dog for our home.
The first few weeks presented many obstacles. Mari was terrified of me. She would shake in her crate as I walked by. She would plaster herself against my bedroom wall, begging for me to leave her. She would dart around the house frantically, hoping to find a spot where she could be alone.
5.18.16 - This Is What I've Learned While Fostering Pit Bulls6
remember the exact day she began to warm up to me. I remember her head slowly poking out from her crate. I remember her tail beginning to wag. I remember the look on her face as she begged me not to hurt her. I remember the feeling as she crawled up into my lap, shaking. I remember how hard she was trying.
I remember every day after that getting better and better. Until one day the bad days were gone, and in their place were amazing days.
Lesson #4:  The Only Way to Break Through Stereotypes Is Through Your Actions
We found Lyla as we were driving down to Florida for vacation. She was a stray, pregnant, flea-infested pit bull. My eyes were wide as I looked at my husband: How were we going to pull this off?
As we were driving, we began to doubt our decision to pick her up off the side of the road. Would she get along with other dogs? Would she be ok with kids? Would we regret this?
5.18.16 - This Is What I've Learned While Fostering Pit Bulls7
Throughout the next few months, Lyla would prove us wrong on so many occasions. She would end up getting along perfectly with other dogs. She was amazing with children. And even two years later, she is still one of our favorite rescue stories. We never regretted it.
People often ask us why we choose to rescue pit bulls; why we’re fighting for a breed that has such a bad reputation. And our only answer is to invite them into our home, to allow them to meet our dogs. Because once they do, their mind is forever changed.
No argument or heated discussion will ever accomplish what setting a good example can.
Lesson #5:  Never Give Up on Them
Because somewhere inside, there’s a great dog just waiting to change your life.

No, we have got to be able to say what we think--and who knows--in the long run we may end up changing our minds anyway.

Ronnie, from The Ronnie Republic and The Ronnie Republic Radio Round-Up talks manners, acting correctly at the dog park and violence in the political scene today.

Both Ronnie and David Gergan said today they have never witnessed this kind of violence at a political rally as told by CNN when a reporter was ruffed up at a donald trump gathering.

Seriously, I can tell you from personal experience violence is just not acceptable.

Sure, you can go down to the dog park and through a gift of God, there are some of us who can mix it up pretty good.  Right, it's an ego trip for a few minutes but in the long run what does it get you.

In today's political environment one has got to think things through before they act--like Hillary said, there can be devastating consequences.

First, if fighting is involved, your mom is going to be angry and who wants to suffer that--do you want chicken jerky when you get home or not.

My mom makes me homemade chicken and rice and I am just not willing to do anything that might jeopardize that situation.

Do you even want to go to the dog park again, or what.....because after fisticuffs certain individuals--people and dogs--are asked to leave.

Trust me on this one--I have seen it happen--the uniformed authorities can be involved, as well,  Then it is a forever situation.

At the end of the day one has to ask themselves.....do I want to watch the debate on the electric blanket with the cats and my mom....or do I want to end up alone in the proverbial dog house.

donald--it's up to you.

"Well, why do you write a blog,"  someone said.  "What do you get out of it."

Okay, I love current events....doesn't everyone.

I love dogs....feeling lucky to interview Officer Brandt of the Derby Police Dept right outside of Wichita, Kansas.  It's the same old story, a pit bull and a husky roaming around unattended, attacking other animals reportedly and eventually being shot by an officer in order to achieve containment.

At the end of the day these two dog roustabouts were in fact good natured pets that were out on the town on their own.

The age old problem again--two potentially aggressive dogs--the neighbors are frightened--panic ensues--you know the rest.

the dogs ended up fine--fortunately--they should never have been allowed to roam free.

Here's the upshot of the story--the next week innocent children killed by Grandma's Rottweiler who never acted up prior.

As the owner of the baby boy--Pit Bull mix, Ronnie--one must always try to understand mom's best friend and more importantly--what are the cops suppose to do--ridiculed for misjudging the friendly pit bull one day but not subduing the pet Rotty the next.  this is a difficult situation for everyone involved and this blog writer does not know the answer.

Do you love President Obama or what?

The best reason of all to write a blog.  Waiting forever for my girl Hillary Clinton and suffering disappointment at her loss for the office, yet glad for a dem it did take a while to get to know this new man.

It turns out not only to I agree with all of the policies of our good President but I also can't resist him as an individual--he is funny, he sings well and he is cute.  All of these things Bill O'Reilly can't beat.  Go Obama!

speaking of Mr. O'Reilly................................

Trying to understand what makes this gentleman tick--using the phrase loosely.  Strapped by his own brand of Catholic guilt yet still trying to live correctly while telling minorities what to think.  The problem is that many folks follow this individual.

The most important reason of all to write a blog--trying to show the truth about Planned Parenthood.  What exactly is Bill O'Reilly trying to say.  Abortion is legal in our country.  Bill makes is sound as if there may be a funeral for the fetus if only it was not used for tissue donation.  Organ and tissue donation are done every day in this country, legally, helping others to survive.  What is Mr. O'Reilly's point given the fact that the lady seeking the procedure is not breaking the law?

I had the pleasure of speaking to a media individual from Planned Parenthood.  Anyone can do this if they just call the number via the website.  The vast majority of abortions are done at less than 21 weeks.  The film often referred to from the conservatives was proven to be a trumped up project.  You would think zealot of the so called no spin zone would be interested in fair and balance reporting as claimed.  This blog writers problem.  Thank goodness abortion is legal today and safe--we all admire children and love them to bits but the choice is available if we want it and it is not the business of Mr. O and he should not try to make any female feel bad about their choice.  Folks, remember what happened to Dr. Laura.

Curious--who, what, when, where, how and why--call me Miss Current Events........

It does take a certain positive energy and curiosity to move forward with the inquiries each and every day.  Seriously, it is usually just who I am, usually inspired by the radio and news, recipes and dogs, sewing and interviews......I really can't keep up and never actually achieving perfection.  I need more staff, I am only me.

Well here are a list of current pages--the question to make them a page or separate blog:

My London Obsession.....Reader, the visitors at the Va and A during the David Bowie Exposition were so excited and overflowing I thought he was actually there in person.

Bringing the world together with food and fabric......a good place to post pictures of Savile Row.  There are great cooking blogs out there--no shortage.  One of my favorites...Cooking with Alia....folks, I want to go to her hometown in Morocco and see these foods and places she is talking about.

Donald Trump's Hair--Mystery Solved

A fabulous place to post pictures of your cats and stories written about them.

Finding Bill O'Reilly--this is limited as the subject becomes nauseating after not very long.

The Ronnie Republic Radio Round-Up;  This started when one felt the irreverance of  KOGO 600 chip Franklin had to be exposed.

Forced to Move to Geraldo and now looking for good morning talk radio--always have the radio on--love writing about it.

Listeners, can you believe this recent dust-up with Art Bell and what day did George Noory's Coast to Coast Am become a political show?  Forced to write about that, too.

Felt so luck to interview Alan Hanson about his expertise on early, 50's Elvis--still grateful for this fine journalist's time.

Interviewed Dr. Ardy Sixkiller Clarke after her inspirational interview on Coast to Coast AM.  So lucky for this amazing lady to give me her time--we can all learn something from this esteemed Professor and her respect for Native Americans and she was also kind enough to share her tips on writing.

Often copying from other publications and putting in my own two cents, agree or disagree, and some of my best posts are simply comments from other readers in the big publications.

The Irish Newspapers and Publications can always be counted on for some of the best writing skills and journalism out there, unique and creative ways of describing a story--but what do you think--agree or disagree....................................

Agreement is never a prerequisite to comment on this blog, always weloming any comments.

Why do I write this crazy blog that perhaps no one reads.....what makes folks tick and a place to post pictues of my cats, current events about the dog park--what else is there.

This Harmless Pit Bull Was Shot Twice, But Now He Helps Educate Others About Breed Stereotypes

Pit Bulls and their guardians are frequently subjected to unfair treatment due to the stigma’s surrounding the breed. Many people associate these dogs with fighting, but anyone who has known a Pit Bull understands that, just like any other breed, pitties are capable of being wonderful companions when given the proper love and care. Unfortunately, the negative stereotype against Pit Bulls has lead to the creation of Breed Specific Legislation that bars people from adopting them in certain municipalities, and low adoption rates make them one of the highest euthanized dog breeds in the U.S.
Marginalized for the negative stereotypes assigned to their breed, individual dogs are left to suffer. Take Fifty the Pit Bull, for example. Fifty was rescued by a loving family in Chicago when he was a small pup. He was known for being a sweet and happy dog, but in 2007 something terrible happened.

Sweet Fifty lost two of his legs after being shot by a police officer for rooting around in someone’s trash. The person who shot Fifty thought he was dangerous just because of his breed.

01-fifty-pit-bull-two-legs

Fifty’s family couldn’t afford the expensive treatment he needed after suffering economic hardship, so they had no choice but to leave him in a shelter in Chicago. Unfortunately, it had a staggeringly high kill rate. Fifty was able to avoid euthanasia afterDoberman Rescue Plus heard of his story and took him into their care.

02-fifty-pit-bull-two-legs

After bouncing around a few foster homes, a Pit Bull lover named Kelly Michael adopted him. The two bonded practically overnight, and Fifty’s doing great in her care!

03-fifty-pit-bull-two-legs

Kelly is just the type of guardian that Fifty needs. She has experience working as a holistic and integrative medicine vet, so she was perfectly suited to help Fifty overcome his injuries. Here he is getting water exercise sessions to help manage his injuries.

04-fifty-pit-bull-two-legs

She even helped Fifty get a prosthetic back leg, so he can run around again!

05-fifty-pit-bull-two-legs

Fifty has quite the appetite for treats and other goodies. Kelly is sure to keep him well supplied. Yum, doggie doughnuts!

07-fifty-pit-bull-two-legs

Fifty is kind and especially gentle. Look at him giving smooches to this much tiny dog!

06-fifty-pit-bull-two-legs

This handsome fellow also travels with Michael to educate people about Pit Bull stereotypes and myths, advocating for the breed.

08-fifty-pit-bull-two-legs

Kelly says that she knew Fifty was her soul mate from the moment they met. After seeing this picture, who would disagree?

09-fifty-pit-bull-two-legs

Fifty’s story inspired Michael to fight until everyone loves and respects Pit Bulls as much as she does. With the help of smiling, wonderful Fifty, we are sure that they’ll be able to change many, many minds and hearts.

10-fifty-pit-bull-two-legs

Fifty’s story may have started tragically, but we can rest easy in the knowledge that he’s found a loving guardian that will give him everything he could ever want. We can all play our part to help other Pit Bulls like Fifty by dispelling myths about these dogs whenever possible. Sharing this post is a great place to start! The more people who get to know the dogs rather than the stereotypes, the better!
To keep up with Fifty and his awesome mom, follow them on Facebook, here.
